When another cabling company that was scheduled to network our computers couldn't provide the cabling needed to do the job, Spanning Tree Technologies name was given to us to contact. Base lining and Security Audit |
In academic environments of all sizes and types, the availability of technology has become a competitive advantage, critical to the ongoing success of the institution.
In addition, the increased number of network intrusions and the exponential increase in the sophistication of the intruders has further complicated the network managers’ efforts in maintaining network availability without sacrificing security. Educational institutions are faced with a formidable challenge of striking a balance between differentiation and cost efficiency, while keeping their networks secure.

Over the years, University’s network has grown in size and sophistication. To truly achieve network availability anytime anywhere without sacrificing security, one must first have a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the existing network. A holistic approach in understanding of the network could only be achieved by base lining and conducting a security audit. Once this information becomes available, then the network manager can analyze the network traffic, capability, and its vulnerability. Armed with these information, the IT team can layout a comprehensive technology migration plan that is robust and secure. In addition, Security audit and base lining data is a powerful tool in systematically identifying and gauging existing and future loss of productivity due to network vulnerability and unavailability.
The university commissioned Spanning Tree Technologies to conduct a comprehensive and detailed base lining and security audit of its network. Spanning Tree Technologies engineers spent a day identifying the existing technology assets including both hardware and software. Then STT developed a comprehensive plan to analyze the entire network. A comprehensive report including AutoCAD drawings were compiled and reviewed by the university IT team. In addition, the network vulnerabilities were categorized and prioritized in the order of importance. This allowed the network manager to immediately focus on urgent needs and to better plan and budget for future technology requirements.
To enhance productivity many enterprises are upgrading their networks with the latest networking gear. However, in many occasions the same level of scrutiny and quality of service requirements are not imposed on structured cabling upgrades. As the demand for bandwidth grows exponentially the importance and the value of the physical layer (cabling) becomes critical in a maintaining 99.999% network uptime.

Well Designed Structured Cabling |
A large enterprise in Southern California, after a major network/ cabling upgrade, began experiencing increased error rate, packet loss, and retransmission.
The cabling was upgraded from Category 3 (CAT3) to Category 6 (CAT6). All the building and the high throughput servers were connected to the network core via fiber.
Initially, the IT team suspected the culprit to be the networking gear. They contacted Spanning Tree Technologies to assist us in diagnosing the problem.
Spanning Tree Technologies engineers systematically began diagnosing the network. To the clients surprise we found out that the increased errors, packet loss, and retransmission were due to improper termination of the fiber and the copper cables rather than the networking gear.
The termination of the CAT6 cables and the fiber were not done professionally and the copper cables exceeded maximum lengths recommended by BICSI. In addition no industry standard certifications were followed.
Spanning Tree Technologies quickly developed a plan to correct the connectivity shortcomings using industry standards.

I have been involved with the implementation of a new IP scheme and a statewide implementation of a new LAN/WAN across Northern and Southern California.
Over the last five years, I have had the opportunity to work with over a dozen cabling and networking organizations. I have not always been very pleased with the results I have gotten.
